Appointment of Lithuanian Commercial Attaché in New York

In order to strengthen the representation of Lithuania's economic interests in the strategically important market of the United States of America, the network of our country's Commercial Attaché in New York is being expanded. Andrius Neviera will take up the post of Commercial Attaché of the Republic of Lithuania at the Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania in New York from today.

A. Neviera will be Lithuania's second Commercial Attaché to the United States. Currently the Commercial Attaché in Los Angeles, the third Commercial Attaché in the US will be based at the Consulate General of Lithuania in Chicago in mid-September this year.

"Today, the lack of supply chains and instability in the markets make it clearer than ever that it is vital for Lithuania to find new opportunities to market its products and services and diversify its export markets. That is why we are strengthening our activities in the strategically important markets of the US and Germany. We are also focusing on creating business opportunities in the Asian region. This will help us to work together with business to achieve a resilient, modern and sustainable economy," said Aušrinė Armonaitė, Minister of the Economy and Innovation.

A. Neviera has extensive experience in managing international companies, having worked in the Philippines for a number of years, as well as with the Public Enterprise "Versli Lietuva". Mr Neviera graduated from Rotterdam Business School with a Bachelor of Science degree.

"I am very eager to start working in the US and to use the experience I have gained abroad working with international businesses and organisations. The relationship with the US is particularly important at the moment and I believe we can do a lot together. New York is one of the world's most important business centres, and I know that we will find many opportunities for Lithuania and our country's business," says Mr Neviera.

The United States is a priority market for Lithuania in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and laser sectors, and the aim is to deepen ties with US science and research institutions. Lithuania would like to increase its food exports to the US, but access to US markets requires special certificates.

The USA is a very important trading partner of Lithuania and ranks 6th in terms of trade turnover among Lithuania's 210 trading partners. Direct US investment in Lithuania amounts to €320 million, making it the 12th largest investor in Lithuania.

The Government has approved a proposal by the Ministry of Economy and Innovation to create 9 new commercial attaché posts. Lithuania currently has commercial attachés in the following countries: the UK, the US, Sweden, Norway, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Israel. By 2024, the number of Commercial Attachés will be increased to 23.  Once these posts are confirmed, Lithuania will have three Commercial Attachés in the US, three in Germany and two in France. Commercial Attachés in South Korea, Japan and Poland will also start this year, followed by Singapore, Denmark and France from 2023. A Lithuanian Commercial Attaché in Italy will start on 1 January 2024.
