Lithuania and South Korea agree on closer cooperation in tourism
During her official visit to South Korea, Minister of the Economy and Innovation Aušrinė Armonaitė met with the South Korean Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Park Bo Gyoon and signed an agreement on cooperation in tourism.
"We are consistently striving to maintain and strengthen the cooperation between our countries in the field of tourism. Although tourist arrivals from South Korea have been relatively low since the pandemic, last year saw a six-fold increase in Korean tourist arrivals. The agreement will therefore allow Lithuania and South Korea to intensify their activities to promote tourist flows," said the Minister of Economy and Innovation.
Lithuania and South Korea are members of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (WTO). From autumn this year, the countries will also work together on the WTO Executive Board, to which Lithuania was elected on 1 June for a four-year term.
South Korea is seen as a potential tourism market, and last year events were organised in Seoul to showcase the Baltic States. This year, South Korean tour operators took part in the Baltic Connecting business mission and sightseeing tours in Lithuania.
Last year, the number of tourists coming to Lithuania was mainly from Latvia, Poland and Germany. However, South Korea and Israel are the leading countries in terms of growth in arrivals in 2022.
Lithuania has consistently sought to build closer economic relations with South Korea, with the Lithuanian Embassy there since 2021 and a Lithuanian Commercial Attaché in South Korea in 2022.
