Lithuania ranks among the top open data trendsetters and is 7th in Europe
According to the results of this year's Open Data Maturity Survey conducted by the European Commission, our country remains in 7th place among 34 European countries and for the first time in its history is ranked in the top group of open data trendsetters. Lithuania has overtaken countries such as Belgium, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland.
"The results show that Lithuania is on the right track in strengthening the digital state and that open data is a crucial backbone of the economy, currently accounting for about 1.35 percent of GDP. In all areas of the Open Data Maturity Survey, we are above the European Union average, and we have every reason to expect and work towards a practical use of open data in our country reaching 1.7 percent of GDP by 2026," said Minister of the Economy and Innovation Lukas Savickas.
According to a study by the European Commission, Lithuania, together with Estonia, Denmark, Latvia and Slovenia, leads the European Union (EU) in opening up high-value datasets. More than 200 high-value datasets are now available on the Lithuanian Open Data Portal. This is the result of strong inter-institutional cooperation, thanks to the joint efforts and contributions of the State Agency for Digital Solutions, the State Data Agency, the Open Data Club initiative and all institutions that promote data literacy among employees and open data to the public.
The study also showed that the use of open data is driving innovation in Lithuania. In our country, increased access to open data is boosting research, improving public services and facilitating the development of data-driven solutions across sectors.
The study mentions that Lithuania is promoting open data literacy in society, focusing on education and engagement to ensure that citizens understand the benefits of open data.
The European Commission also highlighted the contribution of both public sector institutions and businesses in strengthening the use of open data. Legislation in the public sector has made it possible to open up more data, while business engagement is increasing the use of open data in different sectors of the economy.
The European Open Data Maturity Survey assesses improvements in 4 key areas: open data policy, national open data portal, impact of open data and data quality.
Countries are divided into four groups according to their progress in data openness: trendsetters, fast followers, followers and beginners.
This year, Lithuania is in the Trendsetters group, which is the highest scoring group of countries. Last year, Lithuania moved up six places in the survey, ranking 7th out of 35 countries.
This year's top performers are France (1st place), Poland (2nd place), Ukraine (3rd place), Slovakia (4th place) and Ireland (5th place).
The 10th edition of the European Commission survey covers 34 countries: the 27 EU Member States, the 3 European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) and the 4 EU candidate countries (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Serbia and Ukraine).
