Lithuania signs strategic EU declaration to strengthen the semiconductor industry
Lithuania has joined the European Chip Coalition. This strategic European Union (EU) initiative strengthens Lithuania's and Europe's technological leadership in the field of semiconductors. By signing the declaration today, Lithuania commits, alongside other EU Member States, to paying closer attention to developing this priority sector, strengthening technological independence and ensuring secure supply chains.
'Joining the European Chip Coalition is a significant milestone for Lithuanian businesses and scientists, offering greater opportunities to access EU funding programmes, attract substantial investments in advanced technology and boost exports of these in-demand components. It also reinforces Lithuania's strategic importance in sectors with particularly high added value,' said Edvinas Grikšas, the Minister of the Economy and Innovation.
The Lithuanian semiconductor industry is a high-tech sector that is of particular importance to our country. Chips are key components in electronics, making them critically important not only for the EU, but also for the global economy. They play a vital role in the digital economy, industry, transport, energy and many other areas.
The declaration will form the basis for implementing the EU's revised Chips Act, also known as 'Chips Act 2.0'. This initiative will contribute to economic growth in Lithuania and across the EU, increasing competitiveness and strengthening Europe's technological independence while ensuring resilience in strategic areas such as energy, defence, and artificial intelligence.
Lithuania is already strengthening its position in the field of semiconductors by establishing the national competence centre, ChipsC² LT. This centre will help to develop the most advanced scientific and engineering competencies in Lithuania. This centre will make it easier for businesses and the academic community to access the necessary infrastructure and develop the partnerships needed to accelerate the development of semiconductor technologies.
By signing the declaration, Lithuania is further strengthening its national semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and encouraging the business and academic communities to play a more active role in international research projects.
